Animal Rescue

On average, 5 million animals enter animal rescue shelters every year in the United States. Between 50 to 75 percent of those are euthanized. Shelter intakes are spread evenly between owner relinquished pets and animals picked up by animal control. Most of these animals are destroyed simply because there is no one to adopt them.

The domestic pet population has exploded in recent years. Because of this, millions of animals suffer every day. Unless you are a professional breeder you should seriously consider having your pet spayed or neutered. The procedure is good for your pet, it allows them to lead longer healthier lives. The procedure can help prevent cancer and prostate disease in your pets. It’s a small price to pay for the health of your pet and the prevention of more unwanted animals.

How can you get involved in animal rescue?

There are many ways to become involved with animal rescue.

1. If you decide to get a pet, seriously consider adopting a shelter animal. Not only will you be saving a life, but you will also find a loyal grateful companion that will give you years of love and joy.

And after you adopt that shelter animal, tell everyone about it and encourage them to do the same when they decide to get a pet. You can start your search for your new family member right here.

2. Become a foster parent for an unwanted pet. There are a couple of different ways to do this, you can either contact your local shelter and/or SPCA office and ask them if they have a foster care program. If they do, ask them what it entails and decide if it is for you. In some cases it may involve caring for sick or injured animals for a short time.

Or you can sponsor a pet without actually having the pet in your home. There are a few different organizations that allow you to do that. One of the better organizations is the North Shore Animal League America. Just click on the adopt link on the top of the page.

3. You can donate money or time to one of hundreds of animal charities. Simply go to your favorite search engine and type in animal shelter or animal charities and you will find hundreds of organizations that can use your donations and help.
